"Calculators 1968-1983" A pop-up exhibit (and collection)

Calculators 1968-1983 is a pop-up exhibition by Greg Maletic, of his own collection.

Here’s a very short video from this article (which has a nice slideshow too):

You’ll see large, small, slim, pen-sized, abacus-equipped and spherical examples.

I’ve had a fascination with these machines since the 70s, when the calculators my dad would bring home from the office were the only computer-like things I could get my tiny hands on.

I now have more than 250 calculators from the era 1968-1983, each chosen for its beauty and design more than any particular technical attribute.

There’s a gallery on Flickr of the calculators (rather than of the exhibition) which includes the SR-22, a hex/oct/dec machine from TI.

Some real beauties there. In the early 70s my dad brought home a calculator that looked very much like the Unisonic. I spent hours playing with that thing. Definitely laid the groundwork for my love of computers.

I’m still using a Casio I bought in the mid-80s.
