Most retro computing events I have attended have traditionally been based in the south of England, particularly around Cambridge, which was at the heart of the UK’s early microcomputer industry. This makes the Aintree event a refreshing and welcome addition to the calendar.
One of the highlights is a programme of live talks from several notable figures who played important roles in the early UK microcomputer scene, offering attendees a unique opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from computing pioneers.
The North West is also a particularly fitting location for such an event. Manchester has a rich computing heritage, being the birthplace of the Manchester Baby (developed with Ferranti), the world’s first stored-program computer, which first ran in 1948. The region was also home to Ferranti’s development of the F100-L , Europe’s first 16-bit microprocessor, introduced in 1976. This historical connection adds an extra layer of significance to the event.
