The Desktop Metaphor - A Hypercard Essay

Blog posts? so last century next century! How about an Essay written entirely in Hypercard instead?

I’ve been playing around a lot with Classic MacOS in the SheepShaver emulator, and it’s given me a lot of things to sink my teeth into in terms of philosophizing about UI/UX design.
After playing with hypercard a bit, I thought it would be fun to explore the software in a bit more depth by actually making a worthwhile project in it. I got pretty proficient with the paint tools of the software (though, I didn’t touch much of the more in-depth coding on this project), and I feel like I formulated my thoughts in a better way than I would have if I was working in another medium.

The linked file is a .sit archive of a disk image. I created the stack on MacOS 9 running Hypercard 2.4, so I’d recccomend that, but I would expect the stack to work on any OS/Hypercard combo that has Appletalk scripting support, since it’s pretty rudimentary, and doesn’t use the color add-ons at all.

Below is a link to a github repo you can download the disk image from:

The original file may not have worked on everybody’s computer. (had some trouble with various compression software), this one should work. if it doesn’t, please let me know.
