Seems like Diaspora is going away, or in transition

Looking for news re. Diaspora. I joined it when Google+ shut down several years ago. There was active retrocomputing discussion on there. Recently, the node I was on seemed to shut down. I went looking around for others, found one, but the retrocomputing discussion seems to be gone. Not much activity on it, otherwise.

While doing my search, I saw discussion about “Diaspora going away,” but there seems to be work on creating something new with the open source social media system. Would like more detail, if anyone has news.

Thanks.

Anecdotally, diaspora does seem to be in decline. Perhaps this is just the way of things, even non-commercial things: individuals who are developing, or maintaining, or administrating may find they no longer have the energy or time.

There is a pod-finder here

This small pod is still active
https://diasporasocial.net/statistics

This large pod is still active and actively administered (but quite possibly is majority Francophone)
https://diaspora-fr.org/statistics

I find more going on in the fediverse generally - in my case mastodon
