The Pico is rather nice for retro projects - it’s cheap, and it’s available. Even the RP2040 chip is cheap and available for pre-assembly on PCBs.
The usual little difficulty occurs with using it in 5V systems - ideally, one needs some level-shifting ICs, although resistors and diodes will, empirically, do the job.
Some examples seen on Stardot forums:
BBC BASIC on the Raspberry Pi Pico
Is Pico Tube possible?
RP2040/Pico beeb emulator
Interfacing an Atom to a Raspberry Pi Pico

And SMT - my eyes and hands just aren’t that nimble any more!
