Hi, I am trying to get my oldest desktop PC running again, but I need a 5 1/4 DOS 3.2 disk. Anybody have any suggestions. Many thanks
archive.org has many versions of DOS 3.2 in the software section, but the next hurdle is putting it onto a 5¼ inch floppy.
Thanks, yes, download is easy, but how to get it on a 5 1/4 disk, I do not have an answer…Anybody have thoughts? thanks
It might help to give details of the hardware. Is it a branded PC or a generic PC clone?
Hi Larry — 5¼″ disks are getting markedly thin on the ground these days.
As @retiredfeline notes, finding the right PC marque could be important. Some machines used relatively generic MS-DOS, while others needed custom drivers from the get-go. Also, it likely matters whether the machine was a PC or XT with a 360K drive, or an AT with a 1.2M drive.
Nobody makes a USB-connected 5¼″ drive. You’ll likely have to find someone with the right drive connected to a Greaseweazle USB disk reader/writer, some blank disks and the appropriate disk image.
I just picked up a 1.2M 5¼″ drive at VCF Montreal for my Greasweazle. I’m likely in the wrong country to send you any disks, though.
I guess it’s a generic PC clone, marked AT light…thanks for all you attention to my request…
DR/Novell Dos xcopy will transfer from an image fill to 5.25" media no problems at all. It will run on ANY version of MS/IBM Dos.
Have you seen Dr. Dos?
If you’re really keen to get your PC working I just read about a not very expensive (2 digit dollar price) device on the market called Gotek. It has a 34 pin connector which looks like a floppy drive to the CPU. A microcontroller inside the box emulates a floppy from images stored on a flash drive plugged into the box. Search for it and for reviews explaining which model to get.
I figured that such a gadget had to exist for people who have vintage gadgets that use only floppy drives for storage, and sure enough it does.
