COPY OF A COPY presentation slides (on Copy II Plus) by 4am

4am is a prolific copy protection remover in the land of Apple II, and was to give a talk at the recent INIT HELLO gathering. Instead of the talk, cancelled due to illness, we get a mastodon thread with screenshots and commentary. (Each slide is a monochrome Apple II screenshot.)

Subtitled “How I set out to fix a 40-year-old bug in Copy II Plus”

As this was a history lesson, a deconstruct and ultimately a rebuild, there’s a repo:

4am does lovely work. One feature of Mastodon is that a link to a thread may not reveal the whole thread to every reader. If you’re not seeing the THANK YOU ALL, YOU BEAUTIFUL HUMANS final slide in the thread, click on one of the posts in 4am’s thread and it should display more posts.

A clue that you’re hitting the server-imposed end of a displayed thread is you see other people’s replies. For me (a Mastodon user on the https://xoxo.zone server), Ed’s link ends the thread after 20 posts, with no hint that there’s more to come. The whole thread is roughly 40 posts long, and I can see them all if I go via my own server’s link.

I suspect that if I were a logged-in user of mastodon.social, I’d see the whole thread. Every Mastodon server has its own settings, and what you see might not always be the whole story.

oops, very good point. (Although it’s not my home instance, it so happens that I do have an account on mastodon dot social so I didn’t see the truncation you report.)

edit: but I can’t seem to link to the thread on another instance without getting a redirect. How frustrating. Try this instead.
