I was the support lead at SoftArc for many years and ran the BBS/sysop program. That offered a bundle with 2 ports, 256 users and the text interface for $295 and was very popular. FC took over the Mac BBS market almost completely and expanded it greatly. We had a Windows NT server but by the time it shipped the market was changing dramatically.
I moved to development and handled the localization efforts, which eventually ported the program to (several?) dozen languages. Then along came the 'net on one side and Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes on the other and that was basically that. The company re-invented itself for the education market where it did well for many years after that before being bought out by OpenText.

As I started digging into it I assumed this would be sort of a basic information kit, a digital pamphlet or something, but it’s something a lot more exotic: a functioning archive of the BBS with its original client software for Mac. This was supposed to be a demo so you could browse it offline and decide if you wanted to join, but here in 2026, when this BBS has been offline for three decades, it gives us a chance to actually see what it was like when it was alive.
